Compliance
To understand the actual data journey you need insight into the data at a cell rather than a column level. Validating data quality at the cell-level gives the business, auditor and regulator greatly increased confidence in the quality of regulatory data being reported.
Column-level lineage is like a bus route. It represents the overall path the bus takes from the starting point to the destination. The bus route symbolizes a column in a dataset. Column-level lineage tracks how this entire field is created, modified, and used across systems. Just as a bus route's details - starting point, stops along the way, and final destination - are consistent for all passengers, column-level data lineage tracks how the data in that column moves and transforms across processes. It focuses on how the structure (i.e. the entire route) is maintained.
With cell-level data lineage you have insight into the individual passengers on the bus. Cell-level data lineage tracks the journey of each passenger - where they boarded the bus, what ticket-type they travelled with, where they change bus, and where they get off. This level of analysis provides an understanding of how passengers use the bus system to pass from origin to destination, regardless of how different each passenger's journey is from others.
Apply this principle to your business data and cell-level lineage gives business teams visibility of their data transformations so that regulatory teams can easily evidence their reporting outcomes to simplify compliance.
